CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man who makes a living on the ice will be on his bike for a long ride starting this week, heading here to Chicago.
On Thursday, veteran NHL referee Dan O'Rourke is set to embark upon a bike ride along old Route 66 from Santa Monica, California to Chicago. The roughly 2,400 mile trip is to raise money and awareness for the National Federation of the Blind.
“It’s rare we come across someone like Dan O’Rourke who is a family member of a blind person and who, through his own authentic experience, understands that blindness is just one of the many characteristics that a person can have,” said Mark Riccobono, president of the National Federation of the Blind.
The 50-year-old O'Rourke's father and grandfather both suffered vision loss. O'Rourke had hoped to raise $50,000 dollars, but he has already raised at least $30,000 before even starting.
“Dan is the kind of individual we like to call, ‘blind at heart,’ in that he understands that blind people are normal people who just happen to be not able to see,” Riccobono said.
