DEKALB (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Northern Illinois University's Board of Trustees are holding a special meeting this afternoon and are expected to approve the $2 million membership fee for the school's football team to move to the Mountain West Conference.

NIU has accepted an offer to join the Mountain West Conference as a football-only member, effective July 1, 2026.

Northern Illinois will remain a full member of the Mid American Conference (MAC) until that move.

Northern’s profile as a football school reached lofty heights this season, with their upset of Notre Dame.

The Huskies went on to compile an 8-5 record, including a victory over Fresno State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
