(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Police Superintendent Larry Snelling is defending a decision not to discipline nine police officers whose names turned up on a list of members of an anti-government extremist group.

The names of the nine officers appeared on a leaked membership list for the Oath Keepers extremist group, a group that played a role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol violence.

Snelling says the Department investigated, and found no proof that they were actually members. And he promises to post the investigative report online.

"The complete investigation will be up for you and everyone else to read through just to see the measures and the steps that were taken for this investigation," Snelling said.

Mayor Johnson expressed confidence in Snelling, and said officers who do belong to hate groups should be fired.

"If there is evidence that someone is confirmed to be a part of a hate group, absolutely, I still stand by my position."
