(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Mayor Brandon Johnson says he's moving with deliberate speed to find a new health commissioner for Chicago, but he won’t rush it.

Johnson on Thursday wouldn’t discuss how or why former commissioner Allison Arwady left her post as head of the Chicago Department of Public Health; the two differed in their views on mental health care.

Looking ahead, the mayor said he wants to get his pick right as he and his advisors listen to feedback from people.

“What I hear repeatedly is they want leadership that recognizes the real inequities that exist within all of our systems,” Johnson said.

Arwady, an appointee of former mayor Lori Lightfoot, was known as the face of the city's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson kept her on for a transition period, but Arwady has said she was dismissed abruptly without getting a chance to say goodbye to her colleagues.
