Norge Ski Club's 119th winter tournament begins this weekend in Fox River Grove

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Norge Ski Club in suburban Fox River Grove is preparing for its annual jumping competition, which takes place this weekend and is expected to draw 3,000 spectators on both Saturday and Sunday.

This is the 119th Annual distance jumping competition at the club. Charlie Sedevic, with the club, caught up with WBBM.

“The last couple of years we were fighting to get any snow; this year we’ve got snow up to our ears,” he said.

In 2023, unseasonably warm temperatures prompted the club to move its annual winter tournament to February.

Sedevic said they make the snow that’s used on the jumps, which results in faster speeds.

On Saturday Juniors and intermediate ski jumpers will take off from the 40-meter jump, before Olympic hopefuls launch from the 70-meter jump. Sunday’s event is Big Hill Thrill, involves runs from the 70-meter jump all afternoon.

The club has put jumpers on the last two Olympic teams.

“It’s going to be a good crowd, though, this year, just from presales and the talk around town,” he said. “It’s going to be a big crowd: 5,000 – 6,000.”

The buttons, which are required for admission, are $20 when purchased in advance. They cost $25 at the gate. Buttons can be purchased on the ski club’s website. Tickets for the VIP lounge, located in the warm clubhouse, cost $150.
