(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was officially set Sunday evening, and both Northwestern and Illinois ended up in the West Region.

The Wildcats received the No. 7 seed in its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2017, and it will face No. 10 Boise State on Thursday.

The Fighting Illini were handed the No. 9 seed and will open its tournament in Des Moines with a bout against No. 8 Arkansas.

In all, eight teams from the Big 10 Conference were selected to the NCAA Tournament. Purdue, which won the Big 10 Tournament on Sunday, will play in the East Region as the No. 1 seed.

The other Big 10 teams included were: Indiana, Michigan State, Maryland, Iowa, and Penn State.

In order for the Illini and the Wildcats to meet in this year’s tournament, both teams would have to advance to the Elite Eight, which would require each school to win its first three games. Northwestern and Illinois played each other twice this season, and each team took home a victory.
