EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Trump administration is investigating Northwestern University over allegations of widespread antisemitic harassment on campus amid protests over the war in Gaza.
The Department of Education announced the investigation of possible Title Six violations at Northwestern and four other universities. Those are to protect people from bias based on race, color or national origin.
The acting assistant secretary for civil rights says the Trump administration is putting schools on notice that it will not tolerate what it calls “continued institutional indifference to the wellbeing of Jewish students.”
This follows a Trump executive order to potentially deport international students who participate in pro-Palestinian protests.
Last May, President Michael Schill defended Northwestern’s agreement with protestors before Congress.
A spokesman for the university says they intend to fully comply with the investigation and are confident in the actions they’ve taken to address antisemitism on campus.
