(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Half a dozen tenured faculty members at Northwestern University are calling for a halt to plans for a major rebuilding of Ryan Field.

The plans for improvements at Ryan Field add up to about $800 million.

And six tenured professors are asking Northwestern's president, its athletic director and the chair of the board of trustees to put everything on hold, now that the university is embroiled in a hazing scandal.

The letter says "disturbing evidence of harassment and abuse – and high-level efforts to minimize those problems – suggest that we need to get the existing house in order before expanding it."

The professors say they share an interest in "stellar facilities," but that first Northwestern "must ensure that [the] Athletics Program enables all students to thrive."

WBBM Newsradio has asked the administration for comment.
