NW Indiana pounded by lake effect snow; Bitter cold returning to Chicago area

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It has been a tale of two different snowfalls for the Chicago area and neighbors to the east in Indiana.

Overnight, 1.5 inches of light, fluffy snow fell at O’Hare Airport, according to the National Weather Service. Midway Airport saw slightly more, with 1.6 inches recorded.

In Northwest Indiana, it's been a different story. Due to bands of lake effect snow, more than a foot of snow has fallen in the area, with even more expected. .

A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for Berrien, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke, St. Joseph Counties in Indiana.

When it is all said and done, the NWS says as much as 18 inches could fall in northern La Porte and southwest Berrien County, paired with gusty winds, there will be whiteout conditions at times.

Stationed in Michigan City this morning, WBBM reporter Mike Krauser called it a dangerous blizzard, noting the area hasn’t experienced this serious of a storm in a number of years.

The poor visibility and snow covered roads created dangerous conditions, with Indiana State Police reporting a serious jack-knife crash on I-65.

For the Chicago area, the snow event is over, but another blast of arctic area is coming. Today, temperatures will not get out of the low teens and by tonight will flirt with 0, AccuWeather says. Factoring in the wind chill, it will feel like 10 below zero.

Saturday, the harsh cold will continue, with a projected high of 14.

A warm up is coming however. Temperatures will reach the 20s on Sunday, and Monday, we’ll make it into the mid-30s.
