Off-duty Cook County Sheriff's deputy thwarts would-be armed robber near West Loop

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An attempted robbery in Chicago's Near West Side early Sunday morning ended with a car bursting into flames.

Chicago Police said It happened just after 1:30 a.m. in the Fulton Market District.

A 24-year-old off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s Office  correctional deputy was walking on the sidewalk near Lake and Morgan Streets when another man exited a Ford SUV and attempted to rob him at gunpoint.

The off-duty deputy  pulled out his own gun and fired several shots. The would-be robber fled on foot and shortly after, a nearby vehicle burst into flames.

It’s unclear whether the burning car was related to the robbery and shooting.

Police said Area 3 detectives are investigating.
