JOLIET (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Police Chief in Joliet was involved in a scuffle last night when he came to the aid of a restaurant owner who was reportedly being assaulted.
It happened outside the Cut 158 restaurant at about 6:30 pm.
According to police, a man identified as 39-year-old Joshua Medina was searching through a garbage dumpster. He had been told to leave by the owner. Police said Medina became verbally abusive and then struck the man in the chest.
Police Chief Bill Evans was off-duty, in the foyer of a neighboring building and witnessed the incident. He went to the aid of the restaurant owner.
A statement from police said the chief tried to deescalate the situation and gave Medina multiple commands to leave.
When he didn’t, Evans went to arrest him and, according to police, Medina punched Evans in the face.
Both the chief and the restaurant owner scuffled with the man and, police said, he bit the chief’s pinky finger.
Uniformed officers arrived and took Medina into custody. Charges include aggravated battery to a peace officer.
