(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A transportation expert at Northwestern University criticizes the long delay in reopening O'Hare's "People Mover," as the Chicago Department of Aviation provides an update on when it might see riders again.

It's officially called the Airport Transit System, and according to the Chicago Tribune hasn't carried any riders since early 2019.

The system has undergone renovation as well as an extension to a rental car facility. O'Hare passengers have had to rely on shuttle buses.

Hani Mahmassani, director of the Northwestern University Transportation Center, said the People Mover delay is giving the city a black eye and making things challenging for many passengers at O’Hare.

“It’s a flagship for the city of Chicago. I mean, Chicago is all about transportation,” he said Wednesday.

In a written update this week, the Chicago Department of Aviation said the project's contractor has indicated "an updated opening" could happen later this fall. That will depend on successful safety and reliability tests, however.
