Organization helps feral cat populations thrive

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The organization Cats in Action helps people with all issues surrounding outdoor cats.

“These are street cats, alley cats, feral cats, free-roaming cats. We even call them community cats,” says Programs Director Liz Houtz.

But make no mistake. These are wild animals. Even though someone may be feeding them each day, they don’t want to be inside and are not friendly.

Cats in Action humanely traps the cats, has them spayed or neutered so they can’t reproduce and then returns them to the people who are caring for them.

“They do provide a value to the community in that they keep the rodent population at bay,” Houtz said. “It’s not just the cats will hunt rats and kill rats, but the pheromones that they emit, also act as a deterrent for rats.”

Since Cats in Action was organized in October 2022, the organization has trapped, spayed or neutered and returned 400 cats to the streets.
