(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Two suspects have been implicated in what authorities call a crime spree that ended with the random killing of two people in Waukegan last month.

The murders of Rodrigo Olivan and Ana Gil, who were shot Feb. 24 in the 400 block of Powell Avenue, were preceded by a carjacking in Chicago, according to Waukegan police.

Tylo Eddins took an Uber driver’s Kia Sorrento at gunpoint and left the driver near an expressway ramp in Chicago, police said. In Waukegan, authorities say, he robbed a man of $20 and then picked up an alleged accomplice, Ishawn Pitts.

The pair encountered Olivan and Gil on Powell Avenue, and each man shot at the victims, both of whom died from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. The stolen Kia was later found in Zion after it crashed into a fence.

Pitts was arrested Feb. 29 and confessed to the shootings on Powell Avenue, police said. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and is being held at Lake County Jail.

Eddins was arrested in Killeen, Texas last week in an unrelated burglary case. He awaits extradition to Illinois to face murder charges, police said.

Authorities say they don’t believe the shooting victims had any connection with the two suspects. Waukegan police, in a news release, called the deaths “senseless” and “an absolute travesty.”
