(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After she was hit by a car in September 2021, three-time Paralympian Susannah Scaroni was forced to pull out of her fall marathons.

Scaroni, though, has had a comeback year unlike any other. In June 2022, she broke the world record in the 5,000-meter, T54 category race for wheelchair track athletes. She also won the inaugural Bank of America Chicago Half Marathon.

“I can say that [the past 12–13 months] have really shifted my perspective,” Scaroni said. “I’m grateful for each day and each race I get to go to, and I’m very grateful that I get to be alive and get to be racing in Chicago this year.”

Scaroni said following the accident, in which the vehicle hit her directly from behind, she sustained three fractured vertebrae in her back. She was unable to train until January 2022.

This Sunday, Scaroni will race in the Chicago Marathon. She said she’s here to win, but added that “winning isn’t about getting first, it’s about giving it your best.”

A University of Illinois graduate, Scaroni has returned to her alma mater as a graduate student in dietetics. She’s studying the nutritional needs of para athletes.

As if this year hasn’t been exciting enough, Scaroni got married in Champaign-Urbana on Sept. 5.

WBBM’s coverage of the marathon will continue through the weekend. Find all of our 2022 Chicago Marathon coverage here and catch out live broadcast from 6 – 10 a.m. on 670 The Score.
