CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As COVID-19 cases climb in the Chicago area, a group of parents in Indian Prairie School District 204 in Aurora want masks required for all students when they return to school on Aug. 19.
District 204's superintendent has said the board of education will offer an update at its Aug. 9 meeting.
Parent Christine Diorka told WBBM Newsradio she hopes that means a reversal of the July 19 vote to make masks optional.
“The numbers are rising. We are at substantial risk now. The numbers are higher now than they were when they went out of school in May, and in May they were wearing masks,” Diorka said.
She organized a small rally outside the district office Saturday, saying some parents are afraid to voice their support for masks because of heated exchanges they've seen with those opposed to wearing them.
Diorka pointed to the rising numbers and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that all students and teachers wear masks as reasons for the board or Gov. J.B. Pritzker to require masks at schools.
