CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Five years ago this week, Park Forest Police Officer Tim Jones was shot and critically wounded. Doctors thought he wouldn't survive. He’s made a lot of progress since then and on Monday night, he reached another milestone.

The Park Forest Village Board made Tim Jones an honorary detective five years after he was shot in the head while responding to a break-in at a home.

"Timothy Jones for his public service, sacrifice..."

Jones and his family took part in the in-person and virtual meeting.

"Proud of you man. Alright...Congratulations!"

Police Chief Christopher Mannino said Jones made it known when he was a rookie six years ago his goal was to make detective. He has no doubt he would have made it.

"With this being a goal of his from the very beginning, I think it means one we recognize his sacrifice and service; but also that he is not forgotten, that he is still apart of our police department and very near and dear to our hearts," he said.

It was March 19, 2016 when Jones, on the force for one year, was shot three times, including once in the head while responding to a break-in. He suffered a traumatic brain injury. It was initially thought he wouldn’t survive.

"....the fact the he is now thriving, enjoying life. He's working out, lifting weights, has a presence on social media. He far surpassed all expectations," Mannino said.

He continues with rehab and continues to make progress.
