EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The redevelopment of the nearly century-old former Varsity Theater in Evanston could move closer to reality Monday night if the city council approves a major variance.

A neighboring business of the property at 1710 Sherman supports the proposed variation to require only two parking spots on site – and 16 others off site.

Ross Martens owns the frame store, the Alley Gallery, across the street from the old theater site. He tells Evanston Now the increased pedestrian activity from 35 apartments and more retail would be amazing.

The Varsity was one of the largest movie theaters in the suburbs when it opened in 1926. It closed nearly 40 years ago. The city has already agreed with the owner to close part of the alley to car traffic.
