(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A former Cook County government official has decided to change his plea involving his participation in an infamous suburban red light camera scheme.

Patrick Doherty, former chief of staff to then Cook County Commissioner Jeff Tobolski, voiced at a Thursday status hearing that he is now pleading guilty. Doherty was federally indicted last year on 10 counts of bribery that were wide-ranging .

According to prosecutors, Doherty directed payments from the red-light camera company SafeSpeed LLC to former State Sen. Martin Sandoval to curry political favor. Doubling as an agent for SafeSpeed, he also was alleged to have made a $4,000 bribery payment to an Oak Lawn trustee in order to persuade him to install red-light cameras at additional intersections. The Feds also accuse Doherty of scheming with Tobolski, who was also mayor of McCook at the time, in receiving kickbacks from a real estate developer doing business with the village.

Doherty is scheduled to appear at an in-person hearing on July 13.
