CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Paul Vallas in his concession speech Tuesday night said that, based on the election results, it’s clear that the city is deeply divided but still offered the new mayor elect his full support.

“I called Brandon Johnson and told him I absolutely expect him to be the next mayor of Chicago,” Vallas said.

Vallas bowed out gracefully less than three hours after the polls closed on election night. He was sincere in offering new mayor elect Brandon Johnson any support that he may need.

"It's time for all Chicagoans to put aside our differences and to walk together, supporting the daunting work ahead for our next mayor.

“The only pathway forward in our great city is together, whether it’s quality schools, affordable or equitable economic development. The solutions we adopt and implement must work for all Chicagoans,” said Vallas. “I’m proud that we have built a diverse coalition over the past 10 months. A coalition that has spanned across this great city and encapsulates the various cultures, languages and ideologies that make Chicago so unique.”

Vallas even found a place in his concession speech for some humor when mentioning that April 4 is his wife Sharon’s birthday.

“With me spending so much time away, she hasn’t told me what she wants her birthday gift to be, maybe she got it? You never know,” Vallas laughed.
