CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Hurricane Ida has left many dogs and cats in Louisiana without a home, and a local organization is stepping in to help.
PAWS Chicago is currently collecting supplies before heading to Louisiana Wednesday.
“In the next few weeks and months, we’ll continue to be able to bring animals from Louisiana to Chicago to be adopted by families here,” PAWS Chicago CEO Susanna Homan said. “But the first step for us is to help clear the area shelters to make room for the newly displaced.”
Once those animals make it to Chicago, Homan said there will be a greater need for foster families.
“Until they’re adoption ready, we look for homes to place them in for their recovery so they can recover better. If they have surgery, we don’t want them sitting in our animal hospital or in a shelter environment. They recover better in a home.”

She called the current capacity at PAWS “expandable.”
“There’s always a little extra room to bring in more animals if we need to in an emergency,” Homan said. “That’s why we look for foster families. As many foster homes as we have, that’s our real capacity.”
