CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Following the police shooting of Adam Toledo, there’s a push for Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker to sign a new law that would label gun violence as a public mental health crisis.

The proposal would fund a Medicaid Technical Assistance Center working with local groups offering behavioral health services especially in communities of color.

King Church Ministries Pastor Anthony Williams, who lost his own son in a shooting, predicted the legislation would bring structural change in how gun violence is addressed in all circumstances.

“Not only do we support the Toledo family and Adam but at the same time we are sensitive even to the Chicago police because we live in America, we are a nation of violence. We need civility,” Williams told WBBM.

The bill passed the legislature last month and was sent to the governor's desk at the beginning of this month.
