(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The chilly weather did not prevent thousands of hearty Chicagoans from "taking a dip" at North Avenue Beach Sunday for the annual polar plunge to benefit the Special Olympics.

Cold water and good times.

“That was great. We've done it a couple of years now, and this is definitely the coldest so far,” one participant said.

They plunged, they shivered, they triumphed.

“Oh, it's awesome. You know what? The Special Olympics is a great organization. More people went in than watched,” another participant said.

While some people waded into the water and then ran out, others felt that unless you go all the way under, it doesn’t count. That doesn’t mean they are staying under for long.

“How long do you stay in the water?” WBBM’s Terry Keshner asked.

“Two seconds.”

Last year, the event raised more than $2 million for the Special Olympics Chicago.
