Person killed, another injured in Lemont oil plant explosion: Sheriff

LEMONT (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An explosion and fire at a Lemont oil plant has left one person dead and another injured.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred at Seneca Petroleum, located at 126th and New Avenue, at around 9:30 a.m. Authorities believe the explosion happened at an asphalt tank.

Multiple fire crews responded to the scene and, as of now, have the fire under control.  Fire officials are confident that there is no hazmat situation and the public is safe.

OSHA has been asked to come to the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office also noted that the explosion triggered power lines to come down, and ComEd will assess the situation.

The injured person was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet. Their condition is not yet known.

New Avenue remained shutdown between Timber Line Road and 135th Street.

This is a developing condition. Stay tuned WBBM Newsradio for an update.
