(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A stretch of lakefront will honor Chicago’s most famous lovebirds.

Bird watchers in Chicago likely know the Montrose Dune Natural Area well.

It's where piping plovers Monty and Rose chose to settle in 2019 when they became the first plovers in 71 years to successfully nest and fledge chicks in Chicago and Cook County.

Monty and Rose are gone, but their short lives have had a lasting impact on Chicagoans. Now, the Chicago Park District voted to memorialize the pair with the Monty and Rose Wildlife Habitat.

The name applies to the additional 3.1 acres the park district added to the Montrose Dune Natural Area in 2021 and where the love story of the endangered duo first took off.
