CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police were called to a south side apartment building Tuesday afternoon for gunshots. They found that a dog had been shot and things escalated from there.

Police were alerted to gunfire by the ShotSpotter technology. Officers arrived at the building near 63rd and King Drive to find a wounded dog.

It was pit bull that had been shot. Police said the dog entered an apartment and attacked a 30-year-old woman inside.

An officer followed and fatally shot the dog. The woman had bite wounds on leg and was taken to a hospital.

It’s unclear what happened before police arrived when the dog was initially shot.

No one is in custody in relation to the incident at this time.
