(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 70-year-old former political operative for indicted Chicago Ald. Ed Burke is now facing federal charges and the possibility of five years in prison.

Rudy Acosta — long a political servant to Burke and to the late state Sen. Martin Sandoval — is charged in an information, which usually indicates a defendant will plead guilty.

Sandoval pleaded guilty to bribery charges last year and was cooperating with the government but died in December of complications from COVID-19.

Acosta is accused of willfully deceiving investigators when the FBI interviewed him in 2017 and 2018 — specifically, that he concealed information about “periodic cash payments” he made to a state senator, reportedly Sandoval.

Acosta is charged in an information - a document which usually signals a defendant will plead guilty.
