On Monday afternoon, Niles police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the Portillo's drive-thru, located at 8832 W. Dempster St.

According to police, two suspects displayed handguns to two female Portillo's employees taking orders in the drive-thru lane. The suspects then took money belts from the two employees, containing approximately $300 to $400 each. They then fled on food.

The first suspect was described as a white male with a thin build wearing a green hooded sweatshirt. The second suspect was described as a Hispanic male with a thin build wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt.

Niles Deputy Police Chief Nick Zakula told the Tribune there were cars in the drive-thru lane at the time of the robbery and that investigators spoke with “at least” five people at the scene.

Detectives are also checking neighboring security video to see if they can trace the movements of the suspects and possibly identify them, Zakula said.

The investigation is ongoing.
