(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Governor Pritzker today is heralding nearly two billion dollars in tax relief for Illinois residents, in one form or another.
Pritzker says what’s labeled the Family Relief Plans includes suspending the state’s sales taxes on Groceries for a year and halting a hike in the gas tax and in August the sales tax in school supplies will be temporarily suspended.
“We are sending $1.8 billion in tax relief to Illinois families – and we are doing that because Democrats balanced the budget, eliminated the bill backlog, and state government is now running a surplus," Pritzker said in a statement.
"In challenging times like these, it’s more important than ever to have a government whose first focus is on working families and those who are struggling, and leadership that provides new and creative ways to deliver relief when you need it most."
The $1.8 billion dollar package also includes Property Tax rebates.
The package of temporary tax breaks also includes a delay in the effective date for a planned increase in the state's gasoline tax.
Republican state Sen. Darren Bailey of Xenia, who is challenging Pritzker in the governor's race this fall, said that’s a drop in the bucket.
“This gas tax is coming back in full vengeance come Jan. 1,” he said on Facebook.
“He has the gall to insult your intelligence and to continue to take from you, to slap you in the face and insult you with such a menial 2 cents on gas.”
Bailey said the governor should instead suspend the sales tax on gasoline, which he said would save consumers $0.25 per gallon.
