(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some local groups on Friday protested nuclear weaponry ahead of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Nationwide, demonstrators are calling on elected officials to decrease the risk of nuclear war. In Chicago, advocates for the cause gathered at the federal plaza in the Loop.
David Borris with Chicago Area Peace Action wants Sens. Richard Duckworth and Tammy Durbin to take whatever action is necessary to move the U.S. to join the 91 nations that are signatories of the Treaty for Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
“We have been playing with nuclear fire since 1945. It won’t last forever. It is not impossible for a nuclear weapon to be detonated. And if it’s not impossible, then it is inevitable,” Borris said.
Sunday will begin the 60th anniversary the Cuban Missile Crisis, when the world came perilously close to nuclear war.
