WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Hundreds of Purdue University students attended a vigil last night for a student who was allegedly stabbed to death early Wednesday morning by his roommate in their dorm room.
The vigil was held at a sculpture called the “Unfinished Block P,” a large “P” emerging from a block of stone.
It’s said to be a reminder that the Purdue experience doesn’t end after graduation and a way to honor those who didn’t graduate for whatever reason.
They were there to remember Varun Manish Chheda, murdered in what police said was an “unprovoked and senseless” attack.
CBS 4 Indy reported many in the Purdue community were in shock, trying to process what happened to the 20-year-old from Indianapolis.
“It has impacted everyone even if we didn’t know Varun before today,” said sophomore Carrie Sponhauer.
“I personally didn’t know Varun; I just felt it was important to show the Boilermaker community is here for Varun’s family, everyone who knows Varun, and the Park Tudor family especially.”
His accused killer, his roommate, Ji Min Sha, 22 International student from South Korea, was reported to have called 911 after allegedly stabbing him to death.
