WEST LAFAYETTE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Purdue University student accused of the stabbing death of his roommate earlier this week apologized while being led into a courtroom.

There was a so-called perp walk as Ji Min Sha, 22 was being led down a hallway. Sheriff’s deputies gave him a moment as reporters asked questions.

“I was blackmailed,” the international student from South Korea said in response.

“I am very sorry,” he said when asked if there was anything that he wanted to say to the victim's family.

CBS 4 Indianapolis reported that Sha admitted he stabbed his roommate to death at about 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday.

Varun Chheda, 20 was found dead in a chair in their dorm room after Sha called 911.

Police called the murder “unprovoked” and “senseless.” They have not commented on the motive.

The hearing was brief and the judge continued the case to next week.
