GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Indiana State Police sergeant had a very close call along I-80 in Gary Wednesday when a driver believed to have been impaired, slammed into the back of his squad car.

Sergeant Glenn Fifield was just wrapping up a traffic stop and was walking back to his car when he heard screeching tires and saw a van hit the wall behind his car.

It was coming straight at him. He dove over the wall just as the van hit his car.

"It was a split second from the time I saw the car to the time that I went over the wall," Fifield said. "If I had my back turned, I'm quite confident I would have been physically hit by that van."

Fifield is nearing retirement.

Asked what goes through his head when something like this happens, he said, “what goes through your head, it’s time to go.”
