(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A rare species gained a new member at the Brookfield Zoo this month.
The addax is an African antelope that is considered critically endangered. Estimates vary, but an aerial survey from the St. Louis Zoo found less than 100 addax in the wild. Brookfield Zoo says there are 163 in 22 accredited zoos across North America.
The Chicago Zoological Society, which runs the Brookfield Zoo, said a male addax was born at the zoo on July 2.
Senior Curator of Mammals Joan Daniels says the calf, which has yet to be named, is under the watchful eye of the animal care staff.
The calf was born to 5-year-old Simone and 8-year-old Ishnala. The calf is still in the nesting area, but zookeepers say he's starting to venture outdoors.
