BEVERLY SHORES, IND. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A very rare bird typically found in South America is drawing bird lovers to Beverly Shores, Indiana.
A dozen bird watchers had their long camera lenses trained on the fork-tailed flycatchers sitting on a dead tree about 40 feet off the road.
"A fork-tailed flycatcher is a tropical species which comes from South America. It's rare in the United States," said Don Gorney.
"This is the third record for Indiana all within the last 12 years. This appears to be an adult now, so it has an exceptionally long tail...just a stunningly beautiful bird."
A “lifer” is a bird that someone has never seen in their life. Jason Jablonsky, who lives in the area, first spotted the bird and spread the word. It was his first time seeing the rare bird.
"It's awesome. I was shocked to say the least...so pretty cool."
