(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A rear-end crash in northwest Indiana claimed three lives from one family Saturday morning, according to Indiana authorities.

Authorities in Indiana said the family's Kia had broken down, and they were parked in the emergency lane on Interstate 94 near the Michigan City exit with their hazard lights activated.

Officials said that’s when they were hit from behind by the Dodge, which was traveling at a high rate of speed.

All of the family members inside were from Apex, N.C., including the driver, who managed to force open the driver’s door and escape from the Kia, which burst into flames after the collision.

The ages of the three people killed in the crash ranged from 30 to 54 years old.

The driver and two passengers in the SUV were uninjured. A toxicology report was administered, which is standard procedure, and officials said the results were pending.

Interstate 94 was closed for several hours as investigators reconstructed the crash and removed the vehicles from the site.
