CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Researchers are looking at a way to charge electric vehicles as people drive them.
Wires are being installed in about a mile of road near downtown Detroit, where researchers are looking to see how effective they are in charging vehicles passing over them.
Paul Hochman of Humongous Media told the WBBM Noon Business Hour the wires would create a magnetic charge.
"It's really believe it or not, not terribly expensive because, what you're running is wire," he explained. "It's not complex, so you're literally just laying wires under a road and any car built to receive that inductive charging gets charged while it drives."
Hochman said it's a technology many of us are already familiar with and that if it could be a cost-effective alternative to building public charging stations for electric vehicles.
