HOBART (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - About two dozen residents of an apartment building in Hobart had to leave on Monday after the city found what are described as hazardous conditions.

There was a well-being check in a basement apartment in the 100-year-old building at 215 East Street, and hours later, signs went up reading “Do Not Occupy.”

Problems, according to the city, include electrical issues, blocked exits, water leaks, sewage backup, expired fire extinguishers, potential asbestos and black mold. The Post Tribune reported water was found leaking into the main electric box and coming out of outlets.

“The condition of the building presents a clear and immediate danger of serious bodily injury,” read a closure order.

The building is owned by Glenwood Properties LLC and the company’s owner, Joseph Gore, was cited for the issues. The city said he expressed a commitment to correct the problems, but it’s unclear whether that will happen. Some residents have said he’s been unresponsive to complaints in the past.

For the time being, most of the displaced residents are in hotels, but they’re not sure what they’re going to do in the longer term.
