Police officers set to return to duty Tuesday, hours before Robbins swears in new police chief

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The village of Robbins will get a new police chief Tuesday, and the police force which walked off the job Friday night is expected to return to duty in the early morning.

David Sheppard will be sworn in as the village's new police chief Tuesday night and Robbins Mayor Darren E. Bryant said he will be sitting down at 9 a.m. with the police union, which is demanding a new contract after the latest expired in early 2020.

"I just want to ensure that through the course of this time, safety was the number one priority. I want to thank Tom Dart and the Cook County Sheriff's Department for keeping our streets patroled this past weekend," Bryant said.

Illinois Council of Police representative Richard Blass said there is an unfair labor practice on file for the village's failure to negotiate since attempts were first made in 2019.

"We will not dismiss it until we can come to an agreement. But like the mayor said, we are going to sit down and discuss those matters beginning tomorrow. So I'm confident now that we can move forward," Blass said.

Moving forward includes the return of officers to their posts at 7 a.m. pending the receipt of new bulletproof vests.
