(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – After months of waiting, fans could potentially see soccer superstar Lionel Messi play the Chicago Fire FC Wednesday night.

But online rumors cast doubt on him suiting up.

President of Business Operations for the Fire Dave Baldwin won’t confirm rumors that Inter Miami will keep Messi benched with a leg injury.

But he says fans will have other reasons to show up because the Fire are in contention for the playoffs. The team added seats for the 7:30 p.m.
game at Soldier Field, so capacity is 62,000 -- and there appear to be many still available.

Messi has missed Inter Miami’s last three games. Baldwin says they can still watch another international goal-scorer: Swiss player Xherdan Shaqiri, a midfielder for the Fire.
