(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A safety expert is calling on Honda to do more to address a problem with one of its vehicles that can lead to rear windows suddenly breaking or shattering.

Honda confirms that on some 2023 model HR-V crossover SUVs the sealer used to secure glass to the rear hatch can come into contact with the heating elements of the defroster.

Michael Brooks of the Center for Auto Safety says that can weaken the glass over time, and hundreds of drivers have reported the glass suddenly breaking or shattering.

A spokesperson for Honda says the company is working to secure replacement parts and hopes to launch a program to upgrade defective windows in April or May.

Brooks says Honda should respond more urgently to the problem by issuing a safety recall.
