CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – While the recent winter weather has been welcomed by snowmobilers, a safety expert said riders could face some serious risks if they're not careful.
Jeff Hopkins, the safety education administrator at the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said riders need to watch out for bodies of water that appear frozen, but the ice might not be thick enough.
He said riders also need to dress appropriately.
"Wear the proper gear when you’re out sledding, the helmet, the gloves. Dress accordingly for the weather you're going to be out in. It's going to be cold," said Hopkins
He said riders need to watch out for obstacles they could run into such as fences and trees.
He also said drinking alcohol is not a good idea while snowmobiling, and you should never ride alone in case you get into trouble.
