CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) —The Salvation Army says three coins totaling more than $1,600 in value have been dropped in red kettles in the western suburbs.
It was over this past weekend when two gold coins and a silver one were dropped in kettles outside Mariano’s stores.
The two gold coins were left in a red kettle in Westchester, and the silver coin in Westmont.
The Salvation Army says one of the gold coins was a 1914 $10 Indian Head Gold Eagle coin. Estimated value: $800.
The other gold coin was an 1882 $10 Liberty Head Gold Eagle, estimated to be worth up to $900.
The Salvation Army says the money will help fund the organization’s community center in Cicero.
A spokesperson for Salvation Army, Katie Heinz, says they've received a total of 24 gold and silver pieces so far this year.
“This includes donations received at red kettles throughout the Metropolitan division, which runs from Rockford to Lake County, Ind.,” Heinz said.
"Last year, we received a total of 22 gold and silver coins for the entire season."
