SCHAUMBURG (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A northwest suburban man is in jail after mistaking his sister-in-law for an intruder on Christmas morning.
It was just before 7:30 a.m. when police said they were called to a Schaumburg home southeast of Golf and Barrington roads.
When they arrived, they found 50-year-old Kellie Barnett of New Lenox with a gunshot wound to her torso. She was later pronounced dead.
Authorities say Barnett, who had been staying overnight at the home with relatives, was shot by her brother-in-law, 52-year-old Daniel Garcia, who believed she was an intruder.
A 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
Garcia has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and is currently being held.
