(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The former Sears campus' long history with the Chicago area is coming to an end.

Sears relocated to Hoffman Estates in 1992 from the Sears Tower downtown. Since then, it's been known by many as a staple in the national retail industry.

Now, Dallas-based Compass Datacenters plans to construct a data center complex on the 197-acre campus, near the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, west of Illinois Route 59.

Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod said the redevelopment "begins a new chapter for this high-profile property and continues the technology diversification of our tax base."
