CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A second man has been charged with mugging an on-duty Chicago police detective in the South Shore neighborhood earlier this year.
Samuel Flowers, 18, was one of two people who kicked and stabbed the detective Feb. 8 in the 7800 block of South Yates Boulevard, Chicago police said.
The Back of the Yards resident was expected to appear in court Thursday for attempted murder, armed robbery and aggravated battery to an officer charges.
Flowers’ alleged accomplice, Kenyon Washington, was charged days ago in the attack, which happened at about 7 p.m. when the pair ambushed the detective from behind, prosecutors said in Washington’s bail hearing Sunday.
The Area 2 detective, who was in civilian clothing, but carrying a binder embossed with the Chicago Police Department star, was canvassing the area as part of an investigation into a fatal shooting that happened the day before, prosecutors said.
The detective was hit in the back of his head and fell to the ground, prosecutors said. One of the pair allegedly pointed a handgun at the detective’s head and demanded his belongings.

They kicked the detective in his head and body as the officer yelled that he didn’t have anything on him, prosecutors said. Washington, 25, then “made a stabbing motion” toward the detective’s neck, prosecutors said.
The detective’s partner exited a building, saw the two men on top of his colleague and chased them away, prosecutors said.
The injured detective was treated for a cuts to his temple, collarbone and neck, prosecutors said. He also had bruising to his face and body.
