CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — White Sox fans have endured a rough campaign this year, as the team is nearly 40 games under .500 with the 2023 season ending on Oct. 1. This week, though, Sox fans will have one great reason to visit Guaranteed Rate Field.
The White Sox will be offering $1 tickets and free parking to fans for Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Officials said the promotion was a "thank you to fans for their support this season."
The South Siders were originally scheduled to host the Diamondbacks on Monday, but after Arizona had game rained out in New York, Major League Baseball reorganized the schedule and moved Monday’s planned game to Thursday at 1:10 p.m.
Parking and gates will open Thursday at noon. Season ticket holders, premium seating ticket holders, individual suite holders and patio ticket holders will receive a credit to their accounts — as well as free tickets to the rescheduled game.
The team said refunds for all other purchases, including those made through Ticketmaster, SeatGeek and StubHub should be made through whichever service a person used to buy their tickets.
Although any hopes of reaching the playoffs have been long dead for Sox fans, the Diamondbacks are in a tight race for the National League Wild Card race. Arizona currently leads the Cubs by one game. If the season ended Saturday, the Cubs would be the last team in for the National League playoffs.
Social media reaction to the announcement was entertaining, with some snarky comments from individuals who said the Sox would have to pay them to attend the game. Not surprisingly, the promotion reminded some of the infamous Disco Demolition game of 1979.
At least one person said they’d rather see the White Sox spend more money on its roster.
