CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A semi driver has died after a crash in Southwest Side rail yard.
The Chicago Fire Department confirmed the fatality, tweeting that a freight train inside the Norfolk Southern rail yard hit a semi that was stopped on the tracks. The accident occurred in the Back of Yards, near Garfield and Stewart.
According to WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran, it was around 6:30 a.m. when a semi-trailer truck became pinned by two freight trains, one of which was moving. It then pushed the truck's cab into its trailer and then into the adjacent train.
It’s unclear why the semi came to a halt on the tracks.
CFD crews remain on the scene.
