MAYWOOD, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Sergio Brown appeared in a Maywood courtroom Wednesday morning, not far from where the body of his 73-year-old mother Myrtle Brown was found in September.

The 35-year-old former NFL player wore a white, hooded sweatshirt and red shorts. He had long hair and a beard.

Sergio Brown appeared dismayed, perhaps confused, when the charges were read. Prosecutors made the case against the former Notre Dame star, including that he fled the country.

“The defendant booked a one-way ticket to Cancun on Sept. 15 at around 3 a.m.,” said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Jose Villareal. “An Uber driver drove the offender to the airport early on Sept. 15, and he flew out of Chicago that same morning”

Brown's lawyer noted the defendant's football career and his time in the community, but Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez said he poses a “real and present” threat to the community. Molina-Gonzalez ordered Brown to remain held at the Cook County Jail until his next hearing, at least.

He was then led away in handcuffs. It all happened not far from Proviso East High School, where Brown once was a star, and the house he and his mother once shared.
