(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Shedd Aquarium is asking you to go plastic-free this month.

Twenty-two million pounds of plastic enter the Great Lakes every year, and so Plastic Free July is about getting people to reduce their use of plastic that is not recycled, says Jaclyn Wegner, the Shedd’s director of conservation action.

The Shedd is also working with local restaurants as part of the “Let's Shedd Plastic” initiative that encourages and helps businesses reduce consumption of single-use plastics.

A list of community action days and locations is on the Shedd website.

“Participating in a cleanup can really raise your awareness and understanding of how the items you use in your daily life can easily end up in Lake Michigan or the Chicago River,” Wegner said.
